Microplastics in fish and fishmeal: an emerging environmental challenge?

چکیده

Abstract Microplastics are contaminants of emerging concern; they ingested by marine biota. About a quarter global fish landings is used to produce fishmeal for animal and aquaculture feed. To provide knowledge foundation this matrix we reviewed the existing literature studies microplastics in fishmeal-relevant species. 55% were deemed unsuitable due focus on large (> 1 mm), lack of, or limited contamination control polymer testing techniques. Overall, species exhibit 0.72 microplastics/individual, with generally only assessing digestive organs. We validated density separation method effectiveness microplastic extraction from medium assessed two commercial products microplastics. Recovery rates range dosed whitefish samples 71.3 ± 1.2%. Commercial contained 123.9 16.5 per kg fishmeal—mainly polyethylene—including 52.0 14.0 microfibres—mainly rayon. Concentrations processed seem higher than captured fish, suggesting potential augmentation during production process. Based conservative estimates, over 300 million particles (mostly < mm) could be released annually oceans through alone. Fishmeal both source environment, directly exposes organisms human consumption these particles.

Decontamination of persistent organic pollutants in fishmeal and fish oil

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are fat soluble chemical substances that persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in the food chain. Through long-range environmental transportation by air, water and migratory species they are transferred to new locations distant from the source of release and might cause adverse effects to human health and to the environment. POPs comprise pesticides, ...

Legacy Forensics: An Emerging Challenge

With the passage of time and as new types of storage devices are introduced into the marketplace, contemporary devices will slowly lose their compatibility with current operating systems and PC hardware. As a result, such “legacy” devices will pose an analytical challenge to the field of digital forensics. Dated technology, while still fully functional, is becoming increasingly incompatible wit...

The PBDEs: an emerging environmental challenge and another reason for breast-milk monitoring programs.

Levels of the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of widely used flame retardants, appear to be rising rapidly in human tissues, as evidenced by studies of human breast milk. The case of the PBDEs illustrates the value of breast-milk monitoring programs in identifying important emerging pollutants, and highlights why such monitoring programs are needed in the United States. A review...
